Hydroxyurea is a medicine that can help children and adults with sickle cell disease. Research studies show that hydroxyurea lowers the following:

  • The numbers of acute chest syndrome (pneumonia) events
  • The number of pain crises
  • The need for blood transfusions
  • The number of trips to the hospital

Hydroxyurea for the Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease

The long-term efficacy and toxicity of hydroxyurea for infants are undefined, and its role in preventing organ dysfunction is unknown. Short-term feasibility of hydroxyurea administration, toxicities, hematologic effects, and effect on spleen function in infants with sickle cell anemia (SCA) were reported (Hydroxyurea Safety and Organ Toxicity [HUSOFT] trial).
